Fantasy escapes

These books are all fantasy I read this year and since I love unique spins on books, I give you my top three fantasy books in no particular order.

Fourth Wing: DRAGONS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, CHECK!

I want to say that this book is definitely not for young eyes. This book by Rebecca Yarros is targeted at college-aged people.

Fourth Wing is a romantic fantasy set at a brutal dragon rider military college. The world is a militant one. Let me just say, once I chose Fourth Wing, I could not stop reading it. The story’s narrator, Violet Stormingtail, hit me as a very sassy woman who has a physical disability.  Many times, I feel like there are irritating, offensive cure tropes for characters with disabilities in books/film/stories/etc. There is not a cure trope in this bad-ass novel.

The reason why I enjoyed this book is it just felt like a human story about overcoming your differences. Sure, it takes Violet a longer time to heal from certain injuries and it is easier to break her bones, but she just lives with her disability.

The sequel just came out six months after this book came out. That is fast and rare in traditional publishing. Learn more at Rebecca Yarros – Fourth Wing website

Immortal Longings: DEADLY COMPETITION, BODY JUMPING, GIVE ME MORE!

Yes, I know the author Chloe Gong has been on this list before, but her descriptions are really well done. And can I just say that use of jumping bodies in a deadly competition will always get me. This is Chloe Gong’s adult debut and overall just a very different awesome read. Learn more at Chloe Gong – Immortal Longings website

The Eye of the World: GIVE ME MORE RAND

I was reading the first book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan when I had surgery in September on my four little toes on my right foot. This one is a classic and I’m finding it great as I continue learning about how to write epic fantasy. As I was dealing with pain and recovery from surgery, this was a great escape into another world! Learn more at Wheel of Time series (Good Reads website)

Thankful for Bookshare.org

Thank you to Bookshare for making it possible for me to read all of the books that I do. Thanks to bookshare.org, I can read an amazing number of books on my computer. The words are highlighted as they’re read aloud which works great for me because I have visual tracking difficulties, auditory neuropathy with severe hearing loss, and am unable to hold a book. Without Bookshare, my life would be incredibly boring! Please keep bookshare.org in mind if you’re considering holiday or end of year donations. Learn more at Bookshare.org – Donations website and check out this post I wrote for the Bookshare Blog a couple years ago at Technology is a Game Changer, Bookshare Blog.

  1. Hi, Justin,
It is so refreshing to have book suggestions/ recommendations from a young person who is exploring and knowledgeable about books from genres different than my usual fare! I trust your judgment and will add a couple of these to my “ to read” list. Thank you!
