I have three books to bring to you readers in my personal ranked level of excitement. Each of them is the final book in series that I love. Looking for holiday gift ideas for sci-fi and fantasy readers? These are the books I’m ordering from our local independent bookstore for some of my favorite readers, like maybe my mom and brother.
Our Violent Ends (These Violent Delights #2) by Chloe Gong
Ever since I read These Violent Delights, I have been dying to read the last of this reimagining of Romeo and Juliet. Let me explain what I loved about Chloe Gong’s young adult historical fantasy, These Violent Delights: she made the creative choice to have the romance take place before the story and making sure we don’t know what happened to end it, but Roma and Juliette hate each other. It hits differently than any retelling of Shakespeare’s play or many of the adaptations I’ve read or seen before.
I also love the setting this duology takes place in: 1920s Shanghai. It’s gang warfare with a monster running wild throughout the city. And the colonialism is impressively well done.
And the characters, oh just yes. Marshall and Benedikt, yes yes yes. Juliette, go go go. Monsters, great. This book will be released on Tuesday, November 16th. Our Violent Ends – Chloe Gong website
Aurora’s End (The Aurora Cycle #3) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
This entire series reminds me of a big Guardians of the Galaxy movie: it’s got humor, romance, action and heart. The band of misfits take on ancient evil to save the galaxy. What’s not to love? The last book in this young adult series is a space opera that comes out Tuesday, November 9. I really hope these authors write another series because I love everything that comes out of this collaboration. Aurora’s End – Penguin Random House website
Jade Legacy (The Green Bone Saga #3) by Fonda Lee
I am so excited for the final book of this epic urban adult fantasy with a truly epic cast of characters. Anden is my favorite character. Hilo: still hate you, buddy. I am not getting into spoilers, but in Jade War (2nd book), Hilo did something I didn’t like and now I really dislike this character in a great way. Shea, second favorite in the series, is really likeable. This series is a bit violent at times but I’m so into the characters! Can’t wait for November 30. Jade Legacy – Fonda Lee website
You may not be hearing from me much this month – I’m going to be busy reading!
