World cup update: group stage

The last time I wrote about the world cup, I told you that there are three teams I am following: the United States, Norway and England. Well, add a fourth name to that because Cabo Verde against all odds tied all three of their games against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

Where’s Cabo Verde?

Actually, it’s Cabo Verde and not Cape Verde and it is off the western coast of Africa. A small set of islands. You see, the World Cup is a great way to learn or relearn my geography.

They are the third smallest nation to qualify for a World Cup.

They are the smallest nation to ever make the knockout rounds.

They are the first debutants since 2010 to qualify for a knockout round.

And they tied one of the best teams in the world, Spain!

Wait a second, they did what?

I watched as they tied the Spanish national team in their first game. Never count out forty-year-old goalies because this goalie is awe-inspiring. It is really too bad I don’t have any pictures of me after the game. My poor mother reading my manic chat messages as the game was still going on. I think it’s safe to say I love underdog stories.

When is the next game

5:00 CST Friday: Round of 32 against Argentina (and Messi)

What about England?

The English are always interesting because of their unique ability to let down their fans. I have a feeling that they might do so again. They did win 2-0 against Panama last night.

It’s going to be another exciting week!
